Section 1.4 Star Compass

In this section we will learn about the Star Compass.
One way to determine your bearing on a canoe is by observing and comparing the positions of celestial and other markers relative to your canoe. To facilitate this, you can mark the locations of the Star Compass on the opposite railings from the navigator’s seat in the back corner of the canoe. However, since the Star Compass is circular and the canoe is rectangular, accurately placing the markings can be challenging. Trigonometry can be utilized to address this issue. Figure 1.4.1 provides the positions for the markings of each house, which can be adjusted according to the dimensions of any canoe you choose to input. You can learn more about this technique by studying Right Triangle Trigonometry 1 .
Figure 1.4.1. Input the width, w and length l of a canoe to get the locations of the Star Compass along the sides of a canoe. You can switch between the center of the house and the boundaries between houses.
